  18. <p>     There are certain cross-cultural phenomena that we may never
  19. be able to understand: why Le Rourke is Le Rourke, why Germans
  20. love The Golden Girls and why last week at a Hong Kong mall
  21. excitement erupted into pandemonium during an appearance by
  22. decidedly unwaifish 155-lb. Guess? model ANNA NICOLE SMITH.
  23. More than 30 police officers were required to tame the 1,500
  24. fans who stampeded the shopping complex's Guess? store to catch
  25. a glimpse of the former check-out girl. "I was really scared,"
  26. says Anna. "I had my bodyguard and my hair people, and we were
  27. all pulled, pushed and shoved. I thought they were going to
  28. rip my clothes off." She escaped through a back door before
  29. they had a chance.
